MTed, being a member of an international discussion forum has made me much more aware of the different meanings that English words and phrases may have in different English speaking nations and among different peoples withing the same nation.

Since I enjoy learning about word origins & meanings {and paticularly slang}, I love these types of Mudcat threads.

So if I understand you correctly, when joHn of Hull asked the rhetorical question "Are Muslims rubbish?", he meant "Are Muslims nonsense?" Is that right?

And I'm not sure what you meant when you wrote:

I think you meant I've got to 'get up to speed' learning the meanings of British vernacular. Is this close to what you meant?

And btw I assume that your meaning was friendly, right?

Also, I'm sure you're too nice a guy to do so, but some people might blame my efforts to precisely understand what is being said on my astrological placement of Virgo rising. Some people think that Virgo's fondness for details is nitpicking. But I wouldn't say that.
