"Jerkwater Town." When Sam Hill was building his railroad across the American West, he established a watering hole every few miles. He built a well and a windmill to pump the water up to a water tank, with a movable spout. Every 15 or 20 miles, a steam locomotive could find one of these water tanks where it could stop, and jerk the water spout down and fill his water tanks. He also established towns at every well.
