I'm with McGrath.

When I get to MC, I immediately page down to the last thread that's black instead of blue, meaning I've read it. I start searching for interesting things up from there.

If there is no "black" thread in the "upstairs", I reset for three days, and then look for the most recent "black" thread.

I see no practical reason for the major change that Gargoyle suggests. And I can imagine there would be big technical problems, with band width if nothing else, if it were adopted.
