Subject: RE: Obit: Ray Nordstrand--folk radio legend in Chicago
Ray (and Norm) played lots of local music. There was a bin at Rose Records that had the playlist posted every Monday and most of the lp's that were played - an early version of the internet!! Ray, Norm and then Rich did a great job, but Chicago also owes a great debt to Emily Friedman and the others who put out Come For To Sing - I doubt there ever was such a supportive time for new music and local performers - I'm as nostalgic as the next folkie, but I don't think this is hype. I remember how great it was when CFTS published the chords and lyrics for The Dutchman - this was probably before it was ever released on vinyl. I am sure like many, it just wasn't possible to get to the folk clubs or the Old Town School, so Ray and Emily kept it going in a great way. Rest in peace, Ray - great job!! Chris in Wheaton p.s. Don't forget the Fox Valley Folk Fest this weekend, it still carries on the tradition!
