Calum Iain MacLean

was born on the island of Raasay

on 9/6/1915
(d1960).

He was "by general consent the finest single collector of Gaelic folklore our country has yet seen." Hamish Henderson, in Alias MacAlias

He recorded thousands of stories and songs and seems to have collected a South Uist version of the "Ta/in" that existed continuously in oral tradition from the sources that the known literary versions used. Lomax said "It was my great privelege to be initiated into Gaelic culture of the West of Scotland by that wise and generous scholar, Calum MacLean."
