The Maypole shown in the photos at the top looks to be quite a serious operation. It reminds me of the look of some of the highway light poles here in the U.S., that have a large pole and a large circling piece that is raised and lowered by a chain apparatus. It holds a number of heavy duty lights and is meant to illuminate entire highway intersections and cloverleafs. I wonder what engineer gets the credit for "inventing" that kind of highway lighting, and if he maybe grew up observing how Maypoles work?
