This reminds me a bit of the kind of stuff that was going on in the Sixties during the "Great Folk Scare." People claiming copyrights on various folk songs. I understand that at one time, there were nineteen different entities (individuals, publishers, etc.) claiming a copyright on Greensleeves.

For some strange reason, the matter never came to court.
