You've heard of the Gresford Disaster,
Of the terrible price that was paid;
Two hundred and forty two colliers were lost,
And three of the rescue brigade.
Now the fireman's reports they are missing
The records of forty-two days;
The collier manager had them destroyed
To cover his criminal ways.
"The Gresford Disaster" (DigTrad filename[ GRESFORD)
occurred Sept. 22 1934; 265 miners died.
Bonus happy? - not related to any folk song I know but jusy a great news squib as they go -
Under a tree in Hyde Park, London: Anuban Bell & Sunee Whitworth of Thailand were killed by a lightning bolt conducted by the underwires in their bras on 10/27/1999. (I have this story from an Orlando Sentinel squib. It is "Confirmed True" by Darwin Awards which gives the date as 22 September 1999.)
