The answer was found after some experimentation - fine silver polish (without chemicals in). It's a very very fine abrasive, and with many goes with a soft cloth you can actually see the film of the wax polish coming off (and hear the dullness caused by the non-resonant film of wax going away). Repeat, do not use the stuff with ammonia in!
