They're named male/female on alternate years. They do start again with A names when they get to the end of the alphabet.

Exceptions: Hurricanes which cause a large amount of damage have their names removed from the list. There won't be another hurricane called Katrina.

Certain letters are also missed out, if they don't have enough names. I'm not sure which letters though...
