Please remember that the overall culture of the country has a lot to do with gun violence. Switzerland, for example. Britain has little "gun culture," whereas the US, Iraq, Israel, and other places have more. Simply banning the possession/carrying of firearms (or any weapon, for that matter) by private citizens will fail if the overall culture is not taken into account.

And the culture can vary within a country, too. Here in Idaho (this area is rated "rural" by the US Census) firearms ownership is taken for granted. Further east, in Chicago for example, saying that you own a gun becames a moment of shock to the hearer, akin to saying that you sexually molest frogs. And even in Illinois, ownership of firearms can be taken as a matter of course in someplace like Mendon or Hull.
