The first folk concert I ever went to was at Hunter College in 1963.
I was 14, living with my parents in Queens, and going to the Bronx HS of Science. Brownie McGhee & Sonny Terry, Rev. Gary Davis, Mississippi John Hurt, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and all for the outrageous price of $2! My parents, not wanting their son to bewandering in Manhattan late at night, refused me permission, but I went anyway. I was grounded for weeks afterwards, but it was worth it.
