Sonnet 01/10/05                              MXXIII

I cannot ask for more than that muse finds
The love she desires, and deserves. I know
I should not more than dream: Still, caring binds
My heart, and verse always must feeling show.
I cannot pretend not to feel regret
That my words had not strength to hold her thought.
Could I have futures changed, had I just let
Heart speak without rhyme? Have I failure sought?
I cannot want less than her smile: The cost
To me matters not. Yet, my heart is repaid
By what she has inspired: I have not lost
The pleasures thought of her has in dreams made.
Dreams are not enough, for reasons to desire:
I need not hope to love for her inspire.
