I have the lp where Stuart Hamblen narrated how he came to write

there was no other person, he was alone that day...

and it was at a party and either he or john wayne [i forget which
at the moment] made that comment during a discussion and wayne said as stuart was leaving that would make a good song; stuart went right home and wrote it..[haven't played that lp in some time]
