It's always been my understanding that the current use of the word "homophobia" has changed from it's original implication -- that the reason some "straights" were intolerant of gays was because, so the arguement went (and was just accepted as true), in reality those "straights" were actually afraid (hence "phobia") of their own homosexual proclivities.

It now means "hatred or intolerance" of gays -- no relationship whatsoever to "phobia". But even trying to point out the error was too politically incorrect, thus "phobia" is now a suffix with a new politcal meaning -- like "-gate" tagged to the end of every scandal.

...not that there's anything wrong with that.
