FARE YOU WELL
(Capstan Shanty)

I thought I heard the old man say-
"Good-bye, fare you well, good-bye, fare you well!"
I thought I heard the old man say-
"Hurrah, my boys, we're homeward bound!"

The anchor is weighed and the sails they are set-
Good-bye, fare you well, good-bye, fare you well!
The girls we are leaving we'll never forget-
Hurrah, my boys, we're homeward bound!

She's a Liverpool clipper and bound for to go-
Good-bye, fare you well, good-bye, fare you well!
With the girls on her towrope she cannot say no-
Hurrah! my boys, we're homeward bound!

Notes by CFS:

The homeward bound anchor song had for the sailor a sentimental fascination peculiarly its own, and "Good-bye, fare you well," with its wistful, haunting cadence, occupied a high place in his affections until in later years it became to a considerable extent superceded by "Rolling Home."
