The Rod Stewart recording I've heard is not the same song at all. It's an imitation of the Dylan song...with different lyrics and a different tune, but clearly inspired by the Dylan original.

I've played the Dylan tune many times at various gatherings and venues, and people keep requesting it. Bob wrote it for his children. In 1974 we all figured he wrote it for us (the generation) collectively. It felt that way.
