I don't have any notes on this, I'm afraid. Several sources give first recorded in 1929 by Bryant's Jubilee Quartet, a cylinder.

Found a great reissue, though. Lost Sounds: Blacks and the Birth of the Recording Industry, 1891-1922 which gives Who Broke the Lock by Cousins and DeMoss (1898) and a clip. From the cylinder (Looks like a great CD set. With book. Important.)
