I think television is caught in two vicious cycles.

1. It's been around for about 50 years. The people whose imagination and intelligence were crippled by too much viewing as young people are now producing the programs.

2. Meanwhile, with every passing year, fewer intelligent people are watching. The programs have to cater to increasingly mediocre people, and then the mediocre programs drive off additional intelligent viewers and so forth.

Somebody posting above mentioned flickering and migraines. That's another reason why I almost never watch TV or movies.
