It used to be fairly common, back when all the club bands basically knew the same material, for a singer who was just sitting in, to call the tune and the key--I learned how to play everything in every key(pretty easy on guitar), as well as the simple trick of changing back to the standard key for solos--the old standard fake book used to have a chart in the front with the original keys for all the tunes--
