In 1792 Tom Paine (1737-1809) published in England The Rights of Man, in defence of the French Revolution.
He was outlawed in absentia on 12/2/1792 and punished in effigy throughout England.
Tom Paine is a Rebel, his Followers worse,
The best of them all, would purloin a Man's Purse.
For what can you think to their leveling Plan,
They'd take the Purse first, and then hang up the Man.
GOD save GEORGE our KING,
Tom Paine, let him swing;
Let us for ever sing--down with Tom Paine.
"Down with Tom Paine," (a broadside) in
A Ballad History of England, Roy Palmer
