This is guid New Year's Even-night,
We are a' Queen Mary's men;
And we've come here to claim our right,
And that's before our Lady.

Nigel Sellars tells us it's a "first footing" song, wishing well for the new year.

Arguably the last real singing cowboy. But without dispute, a great one. Far as I can tell, cowbow songs tend to assume a bemoaned loss of the good old days - even those from the earliest good old days. Referring to his "The Last Wagon" Critchlow says "To the old time cowboy the coming of the wire fences was the signal that the old days and the old ways had gone for good."
