Modern-day "celebrity" is nothing more than fodder for television. It's based upon whatever sells the most soap, not upon talent or any other of the criteria that have applied in previous times.

As I don't watch television I'm often totally unaware of the existence of people most folks would consider celebrities. The covers of magazines in grocery check-out lanes are filled with faces I don't recognize. I've seen the face of someone called "Jessica Simpson" a lot, but I have no idea what she does that makes her "famous".

If the issue of non-celebrity celebrities is really important to you, just cut the plug off your television set and it will go away.
