When my son Nicholas was baptized in 1982, I rewrote the first verse and changed the "Merry Christmas" line of a Christmas song by John Denver. The original words and tune for "A Baby Just like You" appear on Denver's Rocky Mountain Christmas album.
SONG FOR NICHOLAS
(music by J Denver, lyrics by J Denver, new lyrics by R L Roehrdanz)
From the coasts of morning pale,
We've seen by early sun;
Come safe to port thy tiny sail,
A wondrous life begun.
Your parents love has brought you here,
Their love is yours to keep.
It fills your days with happiness,
And guards you while you sleep.
O little angel shining light,
You've set our hearts to dreaming.
You've given us a joy in life
And filled us with new meaning.
A savior king was born one day,
A baby just like you.
And as the Magi came with gifts,
We've come with our gifts too.
That peace on earth fills up your time,
That brotherhood surrounds you;
That you may know the warmth of love
And wrap it all around you.
It's just a wish, a dream I'm told
From days when I was young.
May God bless little Nicholas,
May God bless you every one.
God bless and keep you Nicholas,
God bless you every one.
