Happy Birthday!

In Maces, Virginia:

Alvin Pleasant Carter (A.P. of course)

was born 12-15-1891
(d.11-07-1960)

The AMC article begins: The patriarch of America's first family of country music, A.P. Carter led the Carter Family from 1926 to the group's breakup in 1943. A collector of hundreds of folksongs from Britain as well as the Appalachian Mountains, Carter adapted those songs into his own originals and wrote many country classics, including "Wabash Cannonball," "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," "Keep on the Sunny Side," "Foggy Mountain Top," "Worried Man Blues," "I'm Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes," and "Wildwood Flower. – it continues.

ALSO:
Franz Lee Rickaby (Ballads & Songs of the Shanty Boy, 1926) born 12/15/1889 (d.5/18/1925) His book is still a standard for lumberjack material. It was also one of the earliest colections of any sort to include most of the tunes. "The preservation of song anywhere except in the human soul and voice is at best a process of questionable success...The printing of the bare words of a ballad, however,...without the tune …is ineffective, sometimes even ugly, like a boat hauled up on the shore." [My favorite Folk quote.]
