When I was growing up in the country, we'd get a live, ball and burlap, tree to plant in the spring. Douglas Fir was our perrenial favorite.

And, knowing that the tree was still alive, it gave a sense of really singing to the tree, when we sang, and carefully picking the ornaments to match the strength of individual branches.
