At the most basic level being a member of a pack is probably hardwired into us via our genes. In early times survival depended on being succesful both in acquiring food and being protected from predators, this was most effectively accomplished in groups, thus through the mechanism of genetic selection the survivors passed on their "come on people now, everybody get together" genes.
