Poll: Dems wanted

WASHINGTON - Dissatisfied with the nation's direction, Americans are leaning toward a change in which political party leads Congress, preferring that Democrats take control, an AP-Ipsos poll found. Democrats are favored over Republicans 49 percent to 36 percent.

In the Senate, 33 seats will be on the ballot in November, 17 of them Democratic, 15 Republican, and one Independent. Democrats need at least six seats to gain a majority. In the House, Democrats need to gain at least 15 seats to become the majority party.

So far, about a third of the public, 34 percent, approves of the job Congress is doing, while 63 percent disapprove.

Meanwhile, President George W. Bush's job approval is at 40 percent, with only one-third saying the country is headed in the right direction, according to the poll of 1,001 adults taken Jan. 3-5. The margin of error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.
