As I recall, Steve McQueen'sThe Blob (1958) and James Arness'The Thing (1951) had marginal names but were actually pretty good.
BTW--did you know that Jim Arness (6'7" in his stocking feet) is still alive? I haven't heard about him in so long I didn't realize it. His brother, Peter Graves, is still around, mostly in voice-overs and narrating biographies on A&E and Biography channels.
