I've noted that since getting the latest updates on the PDF Reader from Adobe, when a .pdf download finishes it's ofter rather slow about displaying it on screen. It seems the system has to think for a while to get it displayed. This does depend on how the site saved the file. I much prefer the ones that do a progressive display as the file downloads, but I've run into quite a few recently that just show a blank screen until a while after the download finishes.
I'm assuming your problem is with .pdf files from the web, and not with opening .pdf files stored on your own machine. If that's the case, you can work around it by right-clicking links and "Save Target" to get the .pdf files on your machine, then just double-click the saved file to open it in Reader. Opening from my own hard drive usually is pretty prompt.
(Note though that not all web sites allow you to save that way. Some few sites block right-click functions.)
I you're having trouble loading .pdf files saved on your own drive, I'd suggest going direct to Adobe and getting a fresh copy of the latest Reader.
