Grab, I'm not certain that hypothesis could hold up, considering China has been brewing and drinking fermented beverages for at least 9,000 years.
I would think the production of saki probably reached the islands of Japan with the first cultivation of rice, if not before.....of course it could have been limited by exactly who was permitted to drink the stuff, as was the case in the Indian subcontinent.
