El diecinueve de enero,
que el pueblo se alborotó—
cuando fué el primer asal-to
que José Mosquera dió.
"La Batalla del Ojo de Agua," Ethnic Music of ...The Spanish Southwest,
Library of Congress LP, AFS L5
[Also at La batalla del ojo de agua] From the fieldnotes: "The story of a robbery between Brownsville and Point Isabel, Texas, of the Rio Grande Railroad. Modqueda was the hero. This song also called the Nineteenth of January, as the hold-up occurred on Jan. 19, 1892."
ALSO:
John Hardy (a desperate little man) was hanged the 19th day of January 1894. A witness stated he killed a man in a crap game over 25 cents. (From what purports to be a quote of the actual court record cited, J & A Lomax, FS USA, p.363.) If there's much more to be learned about him, I expect John Garst will find it in the next few months.
