I've posted this tip before - but people may still find it useful:

Go to the 'Help' menu and fumble around until you find the 'Detect and Repair' option - this often works. This must be a first - a 'Help' menu that actually contains something helpful!

Apart from that Adobe Acrobat Reader is crap - but I don't suppose that you can expect a lot of something that is free.
