A bit off the subject, but since you mentioned using McAfee: a very recent Microsoft KB article, 321505 Outlook Express e-mail messages are missing from the Inbox folder (Jan 04, 2006) indicates that McAfee may cause corruption in Outlook Express email folders.

No significance if you're not also using OE, and I think you've said you don't(?), but if it applies, McAfee supposedly has a fix you can download.
