I just watched one of my favorite movies last night: Avalon. There's a wonderful scene where a young boy is lectured on the difference between "may" and "can" by his school teacher. He uses "Can" (I go to the bathroom) instead of "may" and is made to stay out in the hall until he knows the difference between the two words. When he doesn't know, his immigrant Grandfather is called to school and is totally bewildered by the difference.
