While Roland Arnall was busy contributing some $5 million to President Bush's re-election effort and another $1 million to his second inauguration party, and while he was being nominated by President Bush to be the next ambassador to the Netherlands, Ameriquest, the company Arnall founded as Long Beach Savings in 1979 was being investigated in 49 states for predatory lending practices.

Now, as a result of that extensive investigation, Ameriquest, the largest sub-prime lender in the United States, has agreed to pay a $325 million settlement that includes $295 in consumer restitution, $30 million to cover state litigation costs and consumer-oriented programs, and an agreement to reform its business practices and policies.

Next to the $484 million, 2002 Household Finance Company (HFC) settlement, the Ameriquest settlement is the second-largest predatory lending settlement in history.
