No-one can ever know what goes on in the head of another person, I know that from bitter family experience!
My own, maybe unfortunate, way of dealing with it has always been to look at our human state as being slightly ridiculous. I truly think that the Good Lord has a sense of humour, otherwise he woudn't have made us in the fragile, ungainly form that he did.
I suspect that your friend has been welcomed with smiles, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!
