I don't think it's exactly the same, except in the case of totally phony quasi-religious scam artists who are just in it for the money. There are some of those, no doubt, but they are not the main motive force behind religion. The main motive force is the weight of past culture and tradition, in my opinion, combined with the intense human desire to understand the deeper meaning of life and death.

Religion is a complex matter, involving all kinds of human psychological motivations on the part of the people who are involved in promulgating it. Marketing is a simple matter of profit motive, pure material self-interest, nothing more. It has one objective: to make money. It sees no greater purpose behind life.

Religion is all about seeing a greater purpose behind life. As such, it can be quite profound.
