Thread Name: smoking ban
Subject: RE: smoking ban
I am totally in favour of the public deciding what goes on in public places. But I am not convinced that every Tom Dick and Harriet has any moral right to tell a group people they cant buy a building, go and sit in it, and smke and drink.
I appreciate that the constititional arrangements in a democracy permit the majority to impose their will on a minority like this, but I question their wisdom in doing so. I am just as dubious about the laws many countries impose on the sexual practises people get up to beind closed doors. I have never felt that that was any of my business, nether do I think their private relationship with tobacco is anything to do with me either.
It's a slippery slope when "I can exercise power to enforce my prejudices" becomes "I will exercise power to enforce my prejudices".
