Born on a Cree reservation in Qu'Appelle Val-ley, Saskatchewan, she was adopted and raised in Maine and Massachusetts. She received a PhD in Fine Art from the University of Massachusetts and also holds degrees in both Oriental Philosophy and teaching. In 1976 she quit recording to be a mommy and an artist, but reentered the music scene in 1993
