Ethnographer and Folk Music Collector

(Mrs) Sidney (Robertson) Cowell (nee Sidney William Hawkins)
was born 1903 in San Francisco, CA.

Music assistant to Charles Seeger in 1936
and began collecting folk music in Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina
using a new portable recording device to produce acetate discs on aluminum.

Her Cowell / WPA / Library of Congress, California Folk Music Project opened on October 28, 1938.
(Disenfunded 1940)

She died 2/23/1995 in Shady, NY.

Sidney Cowell seems to have been a very interesting person.
I've been unable to find her date of birth but I'm sure she had one.
