Growing up during WWII, I had always heard the G. P. = "General Purpose Vehicle" explanation, shortened by GI's to "jeep," with a nod toward the Popeye's weird little pet. Eugene appeard around 1936. Eugene came from Africa, ate only orchids, and had a one word vocabulary:   "Jeep!"
