Unfortunately, these things are happening everywhere nowdays. I live in a progressive, reputedly affluent county that makes a great show of it's enlighted school system--we have had several school related shootings, including a fatality, in this last year alone. Just recently, a boy was beaten nearly to death at one of the most prestigious high schools--

A newspaper investigation discovered that the schools have been having terrible problems with violence, but have been concealing it, and outwardly congratulating themselves on the school's high marks on safety.

The first step is for parents and other concerned people to demand honesty from the schools about what has happened--the next step is the hard one--there has to be a dialog between parents, educators, and the community about why it has happened and what they will commit do doing to change things.
