I'm now living in southern Brittany, not only do they stop to say hallo but its obligatory for 4 kisses on the cheeks (with member of opposite sex) or a handshake.
Calling in to see a neighbour, the first thing is "do you want white or red wine?"!
Just saying hallo is just too ordinary....
Everyone is so friendly, it makes life worthwhile.
