Thread Name: Lyr Req: Heavenly Aeroplane (J. S. McConnell)
Subject: RE: Heavenly Aeroplane
A.L.Lloyd's notes on the Watersons album that contains "Heavenly Aeroplane" are a little suspect. He cites one song (Sound, Sound) as being by Cornish, when I know that Somerset male voice choirs (from a quite different culture) were singing it right up to the 1970's. Similarly he characterises the tune "Lyngham" (used on the album as the tune for "while Shephers Watched") as obscure-but-good, even though at the time of writing it was probably one of the top five trad. hymn tunes in English Charismatic/evangelical/Pentecostal Churches - not to mention being in the Methodist tune book, listed as the second tune for Charles Wesley's "O for a Thousand Tongues".

I think old A.L. had strayed from familiar territory, and was forgiveably floundering when he wrote those liner notes....
