That whole war (WWI) was useless. The trouble was, they just didn't know what else to do in Europe at that point, the Austro-Hungarian and Russian empires were nearing the point of internal failure, and they all thought it would be over by Christmas anyway. Surprise......

Santa Anna was a tremendously bad general. Probably one of the worst in history. The Texans could hardly have asked for a less competent Mexican commander.
