Thread Name: The Ouzel Galley (Dublin ship of 1600's)
Subject: RE: The Ouzel Galley (Dublin ship of 1600's)
No Paul, the Ouzel Galley appears to have been an armed merchantman .She left Dublin and went missing. After three years she was considered lost. However, after being gone for five years she showed up again in Dublin , battle worn and laden with booty . The crew told of their adventures which included being captured by pirates and forced to take part in various raids etc. How true the tales were nobody knows. In fact their whole trip is still shrouded by mystery . One theory is that they just went off "pirating" themselves and came home when the holds were full of treasures .

In the end the crew gained nothing from their endevours as the courts decided that the money raised from the booty be put into a fund for the support of poor merchants. (It went to the courts because the insurance companies had paid out to the owners for the loss of their ship and, I suppose, they wanted their money back.)
