It's a salty black grease made from yeast extract. In the UK it's popular to spread it on toast at breakfast.

If you can't get a hold of any, and want an approximation of the taste, drink some straight soy-sauce (or "Maggi" brand cooking sauce) perhaps with a few drops of aromatic bitters thrown in.

Needless to say, you either love the stuff or you despise it.
