That's only one of several possibilities in the realm of "grid computing" which I think is a type of "distributed computing" (The difference isn't clear to me.)

I use my computer at work to run a program for The World Community Grid.

I see Google is promoting a feature called Google Compute which does something similar.

All these seem like worthy causes.
