On this subject has anyone listened really carefully to James Horner's score for 'Titanic'? The title theme uses a quote from the song, 'Caller Herring' whilst the point where the ship finally sets forth into the Atlantic is a set of variations on a theme from 'The Leaving of Liverpool'. Mr. Horner clearly knows his folksong and uses the material with some considerable skill.
